My Gay Paris: Francois Hollande elected, gay marriage and adoption in 2013 in France?

Yesterday, Francois Hollande was elected by french people.  Francois Hollande wins the presidential election with 51.67% of the votes in his favor. A step is taken to move towards equal rights, including gay marriage, already recognized in a dozen countries around the world. With its “Commitment 31″ on marriage and adoption for same-sex couples, Francois Hollande has clearly positioned itself in favor of equal rights for LGBT people.

Francois Hollande said to Tetu (the French gay magazine) that he will vote on gay marriage later than spring 2013. He adds with a smile: “Spring, it’s not a bad time to get married!”

Confirmation of the opening of gay marriage and gay parenting will be decisive with the parliamentary elections in June. If the majority will be socialist then the president will keep his promise.

Nicolas Sarkozy had been hostile to any further progress on LGBT rights. A little too much, according to officials of the UMP. So, last night, the national secretary of the party in charge of press and media, Xavier David Weiss, did he not wait long to put the defeat of the incumbent president’s account of his controversial adviser Patrick Buisson , destroyer of “communitarianism homo,” and his “refusal of any opening” on gay marriage.

My Gay Paris: Girlie Circuit – Europe’s Biggest Lesbian Event Warms Up In Paris

Why should the boys have all the fun? We’re always writing about bars and clubs for gay guys in the Marais, but there are some great parties for the girls too. Paris’ lesbian venues might not be as well-known as the city’s gay bars, but they are still well worth investigating.  There’s also the occasional party too, and the one that’s coming up this month is going to be pretty special!

In two weeks’ time, just after the Easter break, one of the season’s biggest lesbian nights is coming to town. It’s called the Girlie Circuit, and it promises to be a very long night, with the doors opening before midnight and the party going on til dawn the next morning. It’s in the chic Saint Germain neighbourhood, on the left bank, so it’s just a quick hop across the river from the Marais. That’s where the pre-pre-party (keep up!) is happening, at the Sly Bar.

You can expect some of the capital’s most glam girls, with drinking and dancing all night long …

Barcelona Beach Babes

And if it all sounds very glam, that’s because it’s actually the official pre-party for a much, much bigger party in Barcelona later in the year. The Girlie Circuit is a week-long festival of fun that takes place in the Catalonian capital hat’s right: they’re having the warm-up in Paris and the real thing in Barcelona. Sounds like nice work to us!

A Boost For The Scene?

With recent news about iconic lesbian bar Le Troisième Lieu once again under threat of closure following complaints from the neighbours and financial troubles, this could be just the boost that the Paris lesbian scene needs!

WHAT: Girlie Circuit Paris Pre-Party
WHERE: Le Rive Gauche, 1, rue du Sabot, métro Saint-Germain-des-Prés, with a warm-up at the Sly Bar, 22, rue des Lombards, métro Hôtel de Ville
WHEN: Saturday 14 April, pre-party starts at 7 pm, then the real thing runs from 11 pm to 7 am

My Gay Paris: a controversy surrounds a scientific study on AIDS

If you have been to a Paris gay bar recently, you might have encountered one of those ads for “Ipergay”.

Ipergay stands for “Intervention préventive de l’exposition aux risques avec et pour les gays” (Preventive Intervention of Risk Exposition with and for the Gays). It stirred a fierce controversy within the scientific community as well as within the gay community.

What is the experimentation about? It is focused on the effects of Truvada, which is usually used for people already infected with AIDS in their treatment, but the idea here is to use it only in a preventive way, to verify its effects on people who don’t have AIDS. Basically, if you wish to take part to the study, you are supposed to take this medicine and to have unprotected sex, to see if Truvada truly prevents to be contaminated by AIDS. But previous experiments in South America and Thailand have already shown that the use of Truvada in a preventive way was not proved to be effective. And of course, as in any scientific study, part of the population willing to be part of the experimentation will be given placebos.

So this is theoretically very risky, but officially, the people running the experiment do not advocate for unprotected sex. Furthermore, the interests behind this study are not crystal clear. There could be an alleged lobbying from the firm who own Truvada to make this study happen. The name “Ipergay” shows that gay people are associated with risky behavior when it comes to their sex life.

Since january, when the experimentation was launched, only 30 people have agreed to do it, when they expected about 2,000 people. So the lack of enthusiasm for this study could just lead to its failure and its cancellation.

My Gay Paris: The birth of Paris Gay Métropole

Paris wants to have its share of gay tourism, which is a growing market over the world. And with so many gay attractions, and even a gay mayor, why not take advantage of this for the town’s economy and image?

Last month, Paris Gay Metropole was finally created. It stems from an initiative of people and structures involved in gay and lesbian tourism, and also organizations involved in the parisian gay cultural life. Its aim is to promote Paris as a major destination of LGBT tourism in the world.

The idea behind this initiative is that there is a paradox: even though Paris is already a major destination for gay people and a gay-friendly capital, those aspects are rarely put forward when promoting Paris as a touristic destination. Among other things, there is a real lack of information: indeed, there is no way to have a general directory adapted to the needs and requests of LGBT travelers.

The association Paris Gay Métropole was born to change that. It will try to promote, develop and unite the offer of touristic, economical, cultural, and artistic activities targeting the LGBT community. It will also try to improve the welcome of LGBT travelers by the professionals of tourism in Paris. To become a member of the association, you just need to be willing to share those goals!

So, with Paris Gay Métropole, Paris is at last ready to compete with Berlin, London, Barcelona and other destinations to have its say in worldwide gay tourism. Paris is already a major gay-friendly destination: now it will be clear and visible for everyone.
